Our second guest for Millennials Making Money is one of my FemCity Des Moines gals, Madison Fichtl. She is a rockstar and I’m so grateful she was on board to share her story.
Let’s get into it…
What is the business you own?
I am a Virtual Assistant for creative entrepreneurs and a lifestyle blogger.
When did you start side-hustling + why?
I started back in 2016 writing for a wedding blog. At the time, I was planning my own wedding and it was a super fun way for me to have a creative release. I never planned on this fun “side hobby” becoming a business.
What have you done to make some extra money?
After writing for the wedding blog and seeing the need in the market, I quickly realized that there was income potential in this line of work. Shortly after that, I began taking on more clients and started treating this hobby like a business.
In the fall of last year, I created an evergreen course for people who are interested in becoming a Virtual Assistant.
And finally, last year I began to build my personal brand and lifestyle blog which allows me to partner with different businesses and showcase my love for fashion.
I really love how diversified my income is, and how I am able to enjoy each area of the business in a different way.
How + when did this transition to full-time?
About 3 months after I started taking on clients, I quit my full-time job because I was able to completely replace my income (and then some) while getting to work from home with my pup.
Trying to work a full time job (plus commuting about 2.5 hours per day) in addition to my clients was just too much going on. After talking with my husband, we decided to go “all-in” on my business and give it a shot. Honestly, it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. I truly enjoy working and I love the flexibility that my schedule allows.
What would you say to others interested in being a VA?
Go for it! Seriously, there is such a high need for online assistance across many different industries. I can only imagine that as we become an even more technology centered society that the need is going to continue to grow. I have multiple free resources on my blog that you can check out to get started.
The great thing about being a VA is that there is not a ton of start up costs. So, if you decided to give it a try and then end up not liking it, you really are only out time.
What has been the biggest challenge on your side hustle/business journey?
The loneliness! I never expected that working alone from home would get so lonely! It was really hard in the beginning because I was always used to having coworkers to talk to throughout the day. Now, I really try to get out of my home office at least once a week and I co-work whenever possible.
What has been the greatest reward?
Knowing that I was able to build a successful business. I never really imaged that I would be able to run and own my own profitable business but here I am! I still feel like I need to pinch myself and wake up from a dream.
