Millennials Making Money: Leah Wafful

It’s about that time of year when you might be getting a little paler… (or is it just me?!). You can count on Bronze515 and Leah Wafful to help you out with getting a glow back. Leah is our featured Millennials Making Money gal on the blog and I can’t wait for you to get to know her!

What is the business you own + how long have you owned it?

Bronze515 Custom Airbrush Tanning. We opened in July 2016.

When did you start side-hustling + why?

I started this side hustle not because it was a passion, but because I saw an opening in the market. There weren’t many custom airbrush tanning only salons in Des Moines. I knew that as time went on and more research and statistics were published, this would become a trend. I also was lacking something professionally. I wanted something to call my own. I could have easily worked with other companies to start something but I knew I wanted to build a brand from the ground up. If I was going to do this I was going to do it the way I wanted.

What else have you done to make some extra money?

Not there yet but I’ve played around with the idea of being a substitute teacher among a few other things! I am excited for the possibilities.

How + when did this transition to full-time?

This transition happened in September of this year. I’ve worked in a corporate environment my whole professional career. It is scary, but extremely awesome at the same time. I am ready for a change.

What has been the hardest part of the transition?

I think the hardest part of this transition is losing that daily interaction with my current friends at work. Having that consistency of an 8-5 job. Part of me will miss the drama!

What is the easiest (most exciting) part of being your own boss?

Not being told what to do or how to do it. I get to set my own rules. My own time. When I want to go on vacation and when I want to work 60+ hour weeks or 20 hour weeks.

What would you say to others interested in taking the leap to owning their gig full-time?

Start small. Don’t rush into it. Get your ducks in a row. Talk to others around you about your plans. Get advice. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Save your money. Don’t use credit cards (unless of course you points for travel☺). Figure out your goals. Where you want to be in 1 year and so on.

Any dreams of growing beyond Des Moines?

Absolutely! I think when you start a business like mine you have to keep in mind the possibility of opening it in other locations. Right now my focus is Des Moines and figuring out how to manage this full-time. My story isn’t over. More to come.

What else should people know about you?

I have a huge personality! Much bigger than me! I am obsessed with anything Halloween. I actually went to Salem, Massachusetts this fall which has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. Obviously my favorite movie is Hocus Pocus.
