We got back to Des Moines nearly two weeks ago and it’s been a full-on sprint ever since. I left many growing businesses and projects for an entire month and then added a 12-hour time difference while trying to travel and manage it all.
I’m eager to share pieces of that journey beyond cool Instagram Stories. There was a lot I learned about myself, my marriage, and how I handle conflict.
Since we are in the best month of the year, I thought I’d share some things on my radar that are happening locally I’m excited about.
1. Flourish: Fund Ideas that Matter
On Monday, November 12 we are doing something that has never been done in Des Moines before! FemCity Des Moines has asked women from all over the community to submit an idea that matters, meaning people can get excited about investing in it. We have three small business owners narrowed down and they’ll be pitching their idea. As someone who LOVES the local business scene, I am constantly inspired by people’s innovative ideas and I want to pull out a check for $15,000 to help them out. But that’s not happening (yet), so why not mobilize a couple hundred people at $15 to help raise $2000 or so for someone’s stellar idea? It’s Kickstarter meets Pecha Kucha.
We say we want to see more entrepreneurs succeed in Iowa (at least that’s what I read in all of our local business publications) and this is part of the equation. So join us at The Hall. Anyone can come. Not just Fems, not just women. Anyone.
2. Water Works Park Foundation Marketing Committee
This summer, I joined this committee in an effort to be a part of something really big and transformative in our city. I’ve always been the grassroots gal, cheering on the underdogs as much as possible, so I thought it would be fun to step out of my comfort zone and lock arms with some incredible community leaders to offer more park amenities. All that said, it would be really fun to build this committee up with other passionate humans who want to see the park thrive and I just like working with innovative, brilliant humans. Contact me here if something sparks inside of you to join!
3. Beer, Wine, and Food Expo
I was super excited when Iowa Events Center wanted to partner with our hummingbirds on the event. First, how fun. Second, I’d never been and always wanted to! When businesses partner with our hummingbirds, it gives us a chance to share promo codes with our friends, family, and followers. So if you happen to be free next weekend, snag a ticket at this link and use the promo code HUMMINGBIRD to get $10 off.
There is something so magical about Promenade. I love when it snows and I get to hit the town with my favorite gal pals for wine and all things local. The trees are lit up and it’s so fun to see what the retail shops have in store. It’s a great time to snag some items on your shopping list for holiday gift giving and give our East Village businesses some love.
5. Des Moines Love Collection
I’ll go ahead and put out a little teaser… unless you’ve seen my Instagram Stories lately. I’m working on a little experiment (isn’t that what life is anyway?) and going to be putting a physical product out into the world in the near future that I’m certain many of you will love. That’s all for now; I’d follow the IG for more details if I’ve piqued your curiosity.
Thank you Iowa Events Center for sponsoring the Beer, Wine, and Food Expo post.
