Another week, another chance to reflect on all the things.
1. My team made a thing! 7 Ways to be the Most Loved Brand in Your Community. It’s a free download with all the things we do with our love local clients and own brands to create community with our online audience, real-life humans, and customers. It also has a workbook inside. 🤩 It’s designed for people who would much rather invest in humans than complex marketing tactics. No shortcuts or quick wins cause I don’t operate that way.
2. I set some goals for Q2 that were quite ambitious. Why do I set goals? I think it’s just been hammered in my head that it’s the THING I need to do. The reality is, they’ve never motivated me in the slightest. I think they may have helped me get some projects done, just staring at my whiteboard and all, but really I do much better when I follow my creative energy, wherever it leads me.
Anyway, my friend Jenny sends the most timely of things and she sent this quote. So this now lives on my whiteboard and is the thing I’ve been focusing on. In two short days of writing that and really focusing my energy there, I am on track to have my biggest business month of the year. No goals, just deeper more meaningful work.
3. I went to bed last night feeling really disheartened about the state of our country and specifically Iowa. The individualist behaviors that always come back to “me, me, me” have created so much pain, suffering, and disconnect.
“What will happen to MY job if I actually restore voting rights for individuals with a felony conviction? Will I lose future votes?”
“What will happen to MY career if I don’t go to work for two weeks because I have COVID?” (Direct example of someone who did go to work knowingly ill which led to my grandma’s death.)
“What will people think of ME if I show up, use my voice, and join a movement where Black people are really, truly equal?”
“I hate wearing masks.”
“I’m voting for THAT PERSON because their ideas help MY business.”
Don’t get me wrong, I find myself thinking about how something will benefit me, too. I don’t want to lose clients. I don’t want to keep paying student loans (lol). I don’t want a good chunk of my money going to taxes. It’s natural to want things to benefit ourselves. I’m just seeing selfishness in very obvious ways lately and it kind of blows my mind how little people care about others. I wish more of us thought about the collective, the whole. If this is a world where EVERYONE can “win,” how do we make decisions every day?
This conversation is far more complex than a #3 bullet point in a blog… obviously. Just sharing my perspective + observations. ✨
4. On a lighter note, here’s my cute child who is going to be five months in a couple weeks! She loves standing, sitting up, sleeping long hours (hallelujah), long walks, her grandparents, and slowly… the cats. She is a bit moody these days, but hey, human emotions are complex right?
Have a beautiful long weekend. ⭐️
